Question 1

What is Starlink?

Accepted Answer

Starlink is a satellite internet service from SpaceX that uses a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet. Unlike traditional satellite internet, which uses geostationary satellites far from Earth, Starlink's LEO satellites orbit at roughly 550 km, enabling latency of 25–50 ms and download speeds of 50–250 Mbps for most Residential users.

Question 2

Is Starlink actually unlimited?

Accepted Answer

Starlink consumer plans (Residential, Roam, Mobility) are advertised as unlimited with no hard data caps. However, all plans are subject to deprioritization during network congestion — meaning speeds may slow at peak times, but you won't be cut off or charged overage fees. Priority plans have a priority data allotment, after which speeds drop to standard priority.

Question 3

How fast is Starlink?

Accepted Answer

Typical Starlink Residential download speeds range from 50–250 Mbps, with upload speeds of 10–20 Mbps and latency between 25–50 ms. Speeds vary by location, obstructions, network load, and hardware generation. Gen 3 dishes generally deliver more consistent throughput than earlier models.

Question 4

What latency does Starlink have?

Accepted Answer

Starlink latency typically runs 25–50 ms, far lower than traditional satellite internet (600+ ms) because its satellites orbit in low Earth orbit at ~550 km. This makes Starlink usable for video calls and most online gaming, though it's still higher than fiber (1–10 ms).

Question 5

Is Starlink available in my area?

Accepted Answer

Starlink is available across most of North America, Europe, Australia, and parts of South America, Africa, and Asia, with coverage continually expanding. Availability and performance vary by location. You can check availability for your specific address through Starlink's official site.

Question 6

Can I install Starlink myself?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Starlink is designed for self-installation. Most users get online within 30–60 minutes using the Starlink app, which guides you through dish placement, obstruction scanning, and router setup. No professional installation is required, though you can hire a local installer for roof mounting if needed.

Question 7

How long does Starlink take to install?

Accepted Answer

A typical self-install takes 30–60 minutes from unboxing to a working connection. After powering on, the dish connects within 2–5 minutes as it orients itself. The first obstruction scan takes up to 12 hours to fully populate in the app.

Question 8

Where should I mount my Starlink dish?

Accepted Answer

Mount the dish where it has the clearest view of the sky — in the Northern Hemisphere, that means a clear view toward the north and overhead. Aim for under 2% obstruction. Roof, pole, and wall mounts all work; a pole mount is the most flexible option for clearing trees.

Question 9

Do I need a clear view of the sky for Starlink?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Starlink dishes track satellites moving across a wide swath of sky, so they need a clear, wide view — not a single point. Trees, buildings, and chimneys blocking that view cause dropouts. Run the app's obstruction scanner to find the clearest spot before mounting.

Question 10

Why is my Starlink slow?

Accepted Answer

The most common causes of slow Starlink speeds are obstructions (check the app's obstruction map), network congestion at peak hours, a damaged or overly long cable, or Wi-Fi issues. Test with the in-app speed test to isolate whether the issue is the satellite link or your local network.

Question 11

Why does Starlink drop out?

Accepted Answer

Dropouts are usually caused by obstructions blocking satellites as they pass behind trees or buildings, severe weather, or network congestion. If the app shows 'Online' but you still get dropouts, run the obstruction scan — even small blockages cause brief disconnections.

Question 12

Does Starlink work in bad weather?

Accepted Answer

Starlink is designed to handle rain and snow, and the dish has a built-in snow-melt heater. Heavy, dense storms can cause brief slowdowns or dropouts. Minimizing obstructions and using a clear sky view reduces weather-related interruptions.

Question 13

Is Starlink good for gaming?

Accepted Answer

For casual and most online gaming, yes — 25–50 ms latency is playable. For top-tier competitive esports where every millisecond counts, fiber or cable will outperform Starlink. Clearing obstructions and using a wired connection gets you the best Starlink latency.

Question 14

Does Starlink work in snow and cold?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Starlink dishes have a built-in Snow Melt heater that clears snow and ice automatically. The hardware is rated for harsh winters. The main considerations are placement (avoid avalanche zones) and cable care in extreme cold.

Question 15

What's the difference between Starlink plans?

Accepted Answer

Residential is for a fixed home address. Roam lets you move the dish to new locations (portable, stopped only). Mobility is for in-motion use on vehicles and boats. Priority offers higher-priority data for demanding use cases. Price, portability, and data priority differ across plans.

Question 16

Does Starlink have data caps?

Accepted Answer

No hard data caps on consumer plans. All plans are 'unlimited' but subject to deprioritization during network congestion. Priority plans have a priority data allotment, after which speeds drop to standard priority — but data remains unlimited.

Question 17

How much does Starlink cost?

Accepted Answer

Starlink pricing varies by region and plan. Residential, Roam, Mobility, and Priority plans each have different monthly rates and hardware requirements. Because pricing changes by region, check current rates for your address through Starlink's official site.

Question 18

Can I travel with Starlink?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with the Roam plan, which lets you move your dish anywhere within your continent. You update your service location in the app each time you move. For in-motion internet while driving, you need the Mobility plan and the Flat High Performance dish.

Question 19

What's the difference between Starlink Gen 2 and Gen 3?

Accepted Answer

The Gen 3 dish has better thermal management (less throttling in heat), improved weather sealing, and a Wi-Fi 6 router with built-in Ethernet. Peak speeds are similar to Gen 2; the Gen 3's advantage is consistency. Most working Gen 2 setups don't need upgrading.

Question 20

Does the Starlink router have Ethernet?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Gen 3 router has a built-in Ethernet port for wired devices. Older Gen 2 routers required a separate Ethernet adapter. You can also use bypass mode to connect your own router.

Question 21

Can I use my own router with Starlink?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Put the Starlink router into bypass mode (available on Gen 3) and connect your own router to the Ethernet port. This is for advanced users with specific networking needs; most people do fine with the included router.
